Overview

The reimagined Newport Beachside Hotel and Resort will relaunch as The Sunny, Miami’s premier beachside retreat, opening in early 2025. We are searching for an ambitious and motivated Chief Engineer to lead our engineering team and ensure the seamless functionality of the property. This key role will support our commitment to high standards of safety, efficiency, and guest satisfaction.

 

As the Chief Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the smooth operation of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, leading energy conservation efforts, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. In this role, you will also take charge of transitioning the property from construction to full operations, establishing in-house maintenance procedures and systems. Serving as the tip of the spear for the engineering department, you will be an expert on all aspects of the property and a driving force behind operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Engineering team, ensuring efficient day-to-day operations of all hotel systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
  • Oversee and manage the dispatching process, ensuring timely responses to all maintenance requests.
  • Implement and manage work order systems, including HotSOS, to streamline operations and track progress.
  • Transition the property from construction to full operations, establishing in-house maintenance procedures and systems. This includes ensuring all systems are fully integrated and operational for the hotel’s opening while creating a seamless handover from external contractors to the internal engineering team.
  • Ensure accurate inventory management of all tools, equipment, and supplies, and oversee procurement to maintain stock levels.
  • Ensure compliance with local and national safety regulations, including fire codes, emergency procedures, and building codes.
  • Drive energy conservation initiatives and promote sustainable practices to reduce the hotel's carbon footprint.
  • Collaborate with other departments to promptly address maintenance issues and ensure high levels of guest satisfaction.
  • Stay informed about the latest technologies and best practices in hotel engineering and implement improvements where needed.
  • Manage the department's budget, including procurement of necessary equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Train, develop, and motivate the engineering team to ensure high performance and growth.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Chief Engineer or in a senior engineering role within the hospitality industry.
  • Expertise in building systems maintenance, particularly HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management skills with a hands-on approach.
  • Experience with work order management, dispatching, and communications systems; familiarity with HotSOS is a plus.
  • Strong project management skills, especially in transitioning properties from construction to operations.
  • Experience with inventory management and procurement processes.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, building codes, and industry standards.
